If you're like me, you've probably been frustrated for years with your body. I know I was.
It started when I was just 14 years old.
One day I came down with an upset stomach... and I was running to the bathroom a LOT.
This happens to everybody once in a while, so I figured it was no big deal...
But the next day, it didn't stop.
My mom gave me some pepto.... and when that didn't work, Imodium.
But my diarrhea kept getting WORSE.
On the 3rd day my mom decided to take me to the doctor.
He didn't seem to think it was a big deal... “Just keep taking the Imodium”, he said. “It's probably just food poisoning. It'll be gone within a week”.
A couple of days passed... then a week. Then 2.
We went back to the doctor, and he referred me to a specialist.
He ran a bunch of strange tests on me... and my parents and I sat waiting for what seemed like hours before he finally came back.
The doctor pulled up a picture of my intestines, and to my horror I could see they were covered what looked like black and red boils.
I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease – an chronic intestinal disorder that affects 1 out of every 100,000 people.
I'll spare you the technicalities... but essentially my intestines were EATING THEMSELVES from the inside out...
“How do I get rid of it?”, I remember asking desperately...
But my doctor's reply was grim....
“Unfortunately, there is no cure.
You will have this disease
for the rest of your life.”
My mom began to sob quietly in the background as my dad shook his head in disbelief.
And that's how it all began for me. From that day forward my life would never be the same.
I thought having to go to the bathroom 20 times a day was bad... but I also had to inject myself with 4 different medicines every morning just to keep the disease under control.
But it turned out the toughest part of having Crohn's Disease was the way in made me look.
Crohn's makes it tough for your body to properly digest and get the nutrients of food that your body needs to grow... and in the beginning, I began to rapidly drop weight.
When I turned 17 I was 5'11, but I only weighed about 100 pounds.
At the time when most of my friends were losing their virginity, I didn't have the confidence to even ask a girl out on a date, let alone get one to sleep with me.
Heck, I could barely even look at myself in the mirror – I hated the skinny figure that stared back at me.
But I decided I was going to fight this thing.
I started working out every morning in the high school gym.
In the locker room I'd see the other guys with their muscular bodies and I'd be in awe. There was one particular guy named Charles... and this guy got ALL the girls. He had that type of body that even made other guys shake their heads in disbelief.
Strong, muscular shoulders, bulging biceps... and ripped abs that girls went CRAZY over. There'd been more than one time I'd overheard girls talking about his body and how hot he was.
But what was really crazy about Charles is he barely even worked out!
I was in the gym every morning for at least an hour... but Charles would come in and just do a few sets and be gone!
I figured he just had great genetics... and that was that.
This just made me feel even WORSE. I figured what girl would want a guy who had a terrible body like mine when she could have a guy like Charles?
The next year my Crohn's disease became even more severe... forcing me to drop out of school. I was too self-conscious to join a public gym, so now I wasn't able to work out at all.
Between my disease and not being able to lift, my weight plummeted down to around 90 lbs. Here's a picture of me at age 18...
I was still a virgin here, as you may have guessed. And it was around this time I sunk to the lowest point in my life. I'd withdrawn from my friends... I figured who'd want to hang out with a guy who has Crohn's Disease and has to go to the bathroom all the time?
I would have given ANYTHING to just have a normal body... let alone look like Charles. My parents took me back to the doctor... hoping there was something I could do to keep this disease from making me look like I was starving to death.
When the doctor saw how skinny I was, even he seemed a little shocked! He put me on a medication called, “Prednizone”, which was supposed to help me gain weight.
“Great”, I remember thinking... “Another medicine I have to inject into myself every morning”. But if it gave me a normal body it would be worth it. I crossed my fingers and started on the cycle.
Slowly but surely, my weight started coming back. I was starting to look like a human being again! My confidence surged... I was still having to go to the bathroom a lot but as least I looked normal.
But then, things started to get out of hand.
I actually started getting FAT!
It turned out that when combined with some of the other meds I was taking – meds I HAD to take to stay alive – the Prednizone had slowed my metabolism down to a lurch. Within 9 months I had gone from looking like a starvation victim to being 15 pounds OVER weight!
The biggest bummer was it all went to my gut... so now I looked just plain WEIRD. My pant size surged from 32 to 38, and I was almost as embarrassed about my body as I was when I was thin!
I started wearing baggy clothes to try to “hide” it – luckily it was winter in Boston... but I knew that come spring and summer I'd be a prisoner to my pudgy body. I wasn't going to the beach looking like this!
I begged my Dad to help me get a weight set. I figured if I could just start working out again I'd at least put some muscle on to even out the fat. I told my dad if he'd just loan me the money I'd get a job and make payments to him every week.
My Dad went out and got me the weight set and said I didn't have to pay him back. The set really stretched out our working class family budget, but my Dad saw how passionate I was. He helped me set it up in our basement and I made a promise to myself to train every single day. Disease or not, I was determined to start looking like a normal person again and start living a normal life.
I had no idea what I was doing, but every single day I would lift weights religiously. And slowly, I began to get stronger.
I can remember when I first started, only being able to bench press 30 pounds. In a month, I could bench 50. Then 80, then 120, then more.
The progress was very slow. I was flying blind, just doing what I had seen other guys do at the gym and the occasional workout I'd read about in a magazine. But at least now I had some hope. And soon I was starting to look more like a normal guy again... aside from the gut.
But I wanted more. I wanted to have a GREAT body... like Charles and the guys I'd see in the magazines.
I was tired of the slow results. I needed to move faster.
One day, I tried to bench press 165 pounds – a weight that was far too heavy for me.
In the basement, all by myself, I psyched myself up to the lift the weight. It would be a new personal record – and I figured I had to really push myself if I wanted to get that killer bod.
I got under the weight, and with sloppy form I jerked it off the rack. My arms started trembling under the strain, but I knew I could do this.
I lowered the weight until it touched my chest... then with all my might I surged upwards!
It didn't move.
I surged again... but no result. I couldn't lift it. The heavy weight was crushing down on my chest. I couldn't breathe!
I started to panic. I needed air. I tried to jerk the weight up again, only succeeding in moving it an inch then slamming it back down harder on my chest.
I needed help. Being a fiercely independent teenager, I hated it if my parents came downstairs when I was lifting. I wanted to do everything myself, but now, I had no choice.
“DAD!” I screamed with my last remaining breath. “HELP! I CAN'T BREATHE!!”
Fortunately my Dad was nearby and heard my cries. He ran down the stairs and together we managed to get the weight off.
I lay on the bench, panting. My chest ached from badly torn muscles. But being the determined kid I was, I ignored it, told my Dad thanks and started getting some weights ready for my next set.
“Oh no you don't... No lifting for 2 weeks while you recover from that accident.”
WHAT? I tried to tell him it was no big deal, but he pointed out that I could have died if he wasn't around to hear me screaming. I went silent - he was right.
I was devastated. What was I going to do for 2 weeks?
How The Near-Death Experience
Changed My Life
I was frustrated and angry. 2 weeks was a long time. What if I lost the small gains that I had?
My Mom suggested I get some books and videos on weightlifting so I could learn better form. I told her that was stupid. “You don't get in shape by watching videos and reading books Mom... you do it by working out. And besides, I know what I'm doing.”
But like Moms usually do, she coaxed and coaxed and I finally gave in. She took me down to the library, and to the Health & Fitness section.
All the books there featured impossibly muscular body builders, greased up in lame poses. I instantly disliked all of them – I remember thinking, “What do they know? They probably have great genetics... or are on roids!”
Besides, I didn't want to look like that anyways. I wanted to look like the guys in the movies... the ones the girls went crazy over. Not some roid monkey in a thong.
But then, just as I was about to tell all this to my mom... she handed me an old beat up book that was different from the rest.
It looked like it was about 50 years old... it was all in black and white... and on the cover there was picture of a totally ripped guy with a funky mustache throwing one of those huge old school barbells above his head with one arm.
I wish I could remember the exact title but it was something like, “Adonis Feats Of Strength”.
My curiosity was sparked and I opened it up. Inside were pictures of men doing amazing feats – a tiny tank of a man bench pressing 500 pounds... another lifting large stones above his head then bending a metal bare with his bare hands.
These guys looked GOOD – their bodies were amazing – but my favorite part of the book was that it seemed to make fun of the bodybuilders... calling them “glamour boys” who were all show and no real strength!!
THESE guys knew what was up!
“Just this one Mom. Let's go”.
I read the entire thing in the car on the way home.
It Sounded Too Good To Be True!
Unlike the other books at the library, this one didn't have a ton of exercises in it. It simply said that all of the guys in the pictures followed the same simple workout system called, “The Adonis Code”... and that using this system... anyone could get superhuman-like strength!
And since the book showed pics of guys doing stuff like this..
… it got my attention!
The workout itself involved doing just 3-5 exercises in a precise order... and doing them just 3 days a week.
This didn't make sense to me. I was used to working out 7 days a week... and figured you had to put in AT LEAST 5 if you wanted to get ripped.
But these old-time strong men were only doing 3?
But the CRAZIEST thing about the system was this...
It FORBID YOU From Doing Cardio!
The book said that under NO circumstances should you run, bike, or do any kind of cardio while on this routine. It explained how cardio triggered, “fast twitch” muscle fibers that made you LEAN... but not STRONG... and that the Adonis Code would get you lean and strong... just by lifting weights!
I figured I had nothing to lose by trying it out.
Heck... if it worked... and I did get strong like the guys in the book... I knew everything would turn around for me.
I made the decision right there that as soon as my 2 week penalty was over I was gonna commit myself to doing the Adonis Code for 2 solid months.
“I Felt Like I Was Going To Die”
Finally it was time to hit the weights. The good thing about the routine was I could do all the exercises on my home weight set. So I set everything up, got psyched... and sprang into the workout.
And afterwards, I felt like I was gonna DIE.
It was by far the most INTENSE workout I'd ever done! After the final excruciating rep I collapsed on the bench. And then I looked at the clock.
Only 20 minutes had passed since I had started. That was it?
I usually worked out for at least an hour. I checked the book again – had I left something out?
Nope. I did everything right.
Interesting. The workout was tough, but for 20 minutes I could handle it.
And then I remembered that guy Charles... who had the best body in my high school. For how good he looked he sure didn't spend much time in the gym... but when he was in there, he worked out HARD.
As the book suggested I took the next day off to rest, then the following morning did the 2nd workout.
Again I felt like death. But after 25 minutes I was done.
Same thing with Day # 3.
The next week the workouts got easier – or maybe I was just used to the intensity.
But the week after that, something CRAZY happened...
I No Longer Fit In My “Fat Boy” Jeans!
I got up one day happy to see Mom had done laundry and my favorite pair of jeans were clean.
I put the suckers on and they didn't fit!
I found an old belt in my closet to hold them up... I remember how excited I was that I actually needed a belt!
Then I went and weighed myself. Shockingly... I was down 6 pounds in just 2 weeks!
And I wasn't just losing the fat around my mid-section – I was starting to get RIPPED.
It seemed like the inches I was losing from my waist were magically turning into muscle.
A LOT of freakin' muscle.
I was getting noticeably stronger. By Week # 5 I had added 40 pounds to my bench press. By Week # 6 my gut was completely gone... I had a 6 pack for the first time in my entire life. And at the end of the 2 months, I wasn't just in great shape...
I had a body that was BETTER
than that guy Charles from my high school.
And I still do today.

They were AMAZED at my new body... but what was REALLY crazy is the attention I started getting from girls...
I'll never forgot the time I was at a party and a girl started feeling up my arms and asked me to flex. I happily did... and she called all of her girlfriends over and had them feel them as well!
This type of thing started happening to me on a regular basis – girls go WILD over a guy with a great body – and let's just say I wasn't a virgin for very much longer ;)

As I told you earlier, one thing that surprised me about The Adonis Code is that you are FORBIDDEN to do cardio in the program.

Cardio can actually HURT
your muscle growth!
As I mentioned before, cardio works the “fast twitch” muscle fibers... which is what we use when we are running or biking.
Since muscle mass is very heavy, the ideal body for running or biking is NOT packed with muscle. You don't want to carry all of that extra mass around.
So... when you throw cardio into your routine, it sends a signal to your body to STOP producing bulky muscle!
But in order to get a great body quickly... building muscle is just as important... if not more important than burning fat.
This is true whether you are skinny or overweight.
But the main reason The Adonis Code doesn't include cardio is because...
It's not even the fastest way to burn fat!

No less, no more.
In fact, working out too much it can cause you to “overtrain”... which wears your body DOWN instead of building you up. It also makes you more prone to injury.

Workout Intensity consists of 2 things:
1. The type of exercises done
2. The speed, order, and amount of reps
